A Lifelong Love of Words

"I used to say I was born with a pen in my hand, then at age 6 sprouted a 4-line poem to my mother. Only a few years later, I often had poems and prose published on the children’s page of the Brisbane's 'Telegraph'.When I was 12, I tied with a doctor for first place in an open prose competition in the Courier Mail. That was very exciting for a kid.At Uni I experimented with filmmaking. My first short film was selected and shown at the Sydney Film Festival. So I got off to a good start. I was blessed."

THE STORY BEHIND THE BOOK

Jodie's Story

Three editions. One enduring story of redemption and hope.

Jeanette Grant-Thomson's first book tells the true story of a young woman who descended into drugs and prostitution after devastating loss - and found a way back through faith, courage and the people who refused to give up on her.

A JOURNEY OUT OF DARKNESS

When life had lost its meaning

Following childhood rejection and the death of her beloved brother, Jodie's anger and grief sent her into a tailspin. Drugs and prostitution promised escape, but brought her closer to hopelessness. Her journey towards wholeness came through God's intervention and the help of others, including Teen Challenge. Jeanette tells it with honesty and compassion - never hiding the darkness, but never allowing darkness the final word.

"Jodie's journey to faith, her healing and her vibrant love for God all speak of the wonderful grace of God. Jeanette Grant-Thomson has not only given us a story full of courage and hope but a book that should be put in the hands of every young person who struggles with life..."

— Dr Charles Ringma AM, Founder of Teen Challenge in Australia

Published by Ark House Press

Years later, a third publisher asked to bring the book back once more. One unexpected encounter gave Jodie the answer Jeanette was waiting for.

THE THIRD EDITION

The Miraculous Rebirth of Jodie's Story

When another publisher asked to release the book for a third time, Jeanette hesitated. 'Jodie' was her friend's street name, and the real woman behind the story was now happily married with adult children. Would she want to revisit such a painful part of her youth?Jeanette called and gave her complete freedom to say no. Jodie asked for time to think. Days later, Jodie telephoned with an extraordinary story. While walking, she had met a Christian woman who revealed that she too had escaped drugs and prostitution. When Jodie asked what had helped her find a way out, the woman replied:

"I read a book called Jodie's Story!"

For Jodie, the decision was suddenly clear.

"So, Jeanette, go ahead and get it published again. Who am I to stand in the way of God?"

Amelia’s Island Review
Thank you Jeanette for sending me your latest book “Amelia’s Island”. Wow, what a read! I am not one to do a lot of reading of novels, but the title and beginning chapters really captured my attention. To my surprise, I soon found myself at that captivating point of “not being able to put it down”. I read it in two days, and was rushing to get my housework done to get back to the gripping story of Amelia and Kate.

The story continued to keep me in suspense, wondering what was going to happen next. The twists and turns, highs and lows, were woven in between sweet episodes of friendships and deepening relationships. You certainly painted a very clear and inviting picture of the Island and surrounds. I felt I was walking those pathways and sandbars with Amelia.

I enjoyed getting to know the girls and the male characters throughout the book. Your detailed description of their unique personalities made me feel I knew their strengths and weaknesses.

I enjoyed the spiritual flavour as the characters expressed their beliefs, while others re-engaged with their lost faith. Reading their heartfelt prayers, seeing God answer, and watching the unfolding renewing of faith in God, was certainly refreshing.

The gripping finale kept me putting off all else, and quickly turning the pages with intrigue, wondering what was going to eventuate with Jack and his change of direction. So much so, that I kept reading and finished the book at midnight! I was sort of sad it ended. It was a very exciting read, and I highly recommend it. You will probably be like me — just can’t put it down. That’s the sign of a jolly good book. Five stars for sure!

Keep writing Jeanette, I’ll be in line waiting for the next one!

Lantern Light Review
“Lantern Light” is a sophisticated story of adventure, friendship, love, loss and faith, that transports its readers from the metropolitan streets of “groovy” 1970s Brisbane, into the vivid, “hot, green, world” of New Ireland, in the jungles of Papua New Guinea.

Grant-Thomson’s writing is accessible and brings a unique and imbibing sense of space to the reader, providing an intimate “in-the-moment” read, where you feel as if you are there with the characters around the hurricane lantern sharing stories in one of the simple houses where the teachers lived.

The multi-layered complexity of this novel is carefully woven to draw the reader further into the lives of the group of young teachers.

River Song Review
Yesterday I visited a friend who was waiting for urgent surgery. I had come to give her my copy of River Song last week.

She LOVED it. “So easy to read. It was a beautiful story.”

Took her to places she’s never been able to visit and took her mind off the ever present high levels of pain.

Writing books for people to enter spaces they can’t go lifts heart and soul. Thank you Jeanette.

River Song Review
Another beautifully crafted novel by Jeanette Grant Thomson, author of Lantern Light, Amelia’s Island and many others. Claire, the main character is a very likeable young lady while her rather different friend Viv, piqued my interest from the start.

The story flowed very well — and it made for easy reading and a desire to keep turning the pages. The beautiful setting where the river flowed added charm to the story — a perfect context and backdrop in an elegant homestead.

Plenty of interest is generated by unforeseen circumstances and plot twists that finally reach a happy ending.

The novel is based in the sixties — the age of flower power and the Vietnam war. The presentation of the book is excellent — adds to the quality of the novel. Several important themes are woven into the story that forces the reader to put on her thinking cap and reflect as she reads.

An unobtrusive faith element is cleverly threaded into the tale and adds a great deal to it. River Song is a book to pick up any time and enjoy. I highly recommend it.

Lantern Light Review
A captivating story that blends adventure, mystery, romance, and faith in a truly engaging way. The vivid setting of New Ireland brings the story to life, and Ali's emotional journey is both heartfelt and inspiring.

I found myself invested in the characters from beginning to end, and the ending left a lasting impression. A memorable and uplifting read that I highly recommend.

Lantern Light by Jeanette Grant-Thomson is at times fascinating and at times gripping. Set on the cusp of Papua New Guinea's Independence in the late 1970s, it revolves around the ex-pat single teachers of Barrington Place, a school for local girls on New Ireland.

The book explores the before and after of an adventure gone tragically wrong for two of the teachers, mostly seen through Ali's eyes.

Lantern Light draws from many of the author's own experiences in Brisbane and New Ireland which accounts for the strong sense of place that permeates the book — the little details, the sights, sounds and smells, the foibles of the different characters — so that one is transported to this magical place surrounded by the jungle or sitting in the glow of the lantern light at night.

It is also a tale of unrequited love and loss, of hope deferred, and of radical changes and new beginnings.

The suspense gradually builds up in the first half of the book and the aftermath of the tragedy weighs heavily in the second part. In many ways, it's an emotional suspense on a slow burn. It also has a thread of spirituality and faith, which becomes more prominent towards the end of the story.

The story is told mostly in Ali's narrative voice and perspective. The prose is descriptive and easy to read and I cared about the characters. At a couple of points, I felt my engagement lag for a page or two, but was then pulled back into the story, turning pages to find out what happened next.

I would have liked to have seen more of the PNG nationals as more than background characters, and warmed more to Craig than to Dave, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed the story and am looking forward to reading more from this author.
